Basic Science and Humanities
The Department of Basic Sciences & Humanities is the foremost Department having its functional foundation in the year 2008. The Department comprises of four divisions – Physical Science, Chemical Science, Mathematics and Literature (English). The Department is one of the largest and prestigious unit taking care of the 1st year students to develop their academic and non-academic activities and skill oriented programmes for their bright future.
Presently, the Department is headed by Dr.Narrasimha Murti Dusi, followed by many experiencedfaculty members.
The Department has been activity engaged in carrying out research in basic fields of Science and played active part in organizing several FDPs, Workshops, Techno Fests, Orientation programmes, Sports and Cultural activities for the overall development of students and Faculty by inviting experienced experts in the concerned areas.
DEPARTMENTAL LABS:
Presently, the Department consists of English Communication Skills (ECS) Lab, Applied/Engineering Chemistry Lab, Applied/Engineering Physics Lab, Each lab is taken care by experienced Faculty members and Lab assistants.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS:
Department of Basic Science and Humanities in BITS offers B.Tech courses related to 1st Year students.
RESEARCH AREAS:
Department of Basic Science and Humanities, being one of the core Departments in BITS, is actively engaged in research activities and publications. Presently, some of the broader research areas of the Department are:
1. Physical Science
2. Chemical Science
3. Applied Mathematics
4. Literature Study (English)
BEYOND ACADEMICS:
BITS believes in all round development. With this motto, Basic Science and Humanities Department has been actively participating in events besides the curriculum such as FDPs, Workshops, Techno Fests, Orientation programmes, Sports and Cultural activities. The students of the department, with help and association from faculties, had formed a club which voluntarily works for social welfare and helping the deprived. The department has tradition to organize inter-departmental as well as institute level cultural activities. The Department takes keen concern about the Disciplinary conduct of the students.

Message from HOD – DR. Narrasemha Murti Dusi
It gives me great delight to present a brief account of Department of Basic Science & Humanities. Since, the Department of BS&H is the core platform where the foundation subjects for all the branches of engineering and technology is laid out, the Department of Basic Science & Humanities imparts to build a solid base as part of the Engineering Education.
The BSH department plays a significant role in teaching basic sciences courses as arranged by the curriculum of the university in I, II , III & IV year of B.Tech. education. The Department develops and nourishes knowledge in subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, English, Computer Application etc. Well experienced, skilled, educated, and dedicated Faculty and Staff Members have been the backbone of this department. Besides delivering the primary teaching duties with utmost involvement, the Faculty have keen concern in the publications and paper presentations in National as well as International Journals of repute, Conferences, Seminars for attaining perfection in their profession.
The teaching component comprises of well-planned lectures, tutorials and practical’s along with various other initiatives like e-learning. Faculty members execute the role of a perfect facilitator as Mentor in all their activities while motivating the students in curricular and extra curricular activities. The teaching methodology adopted in the classroom learning is based on the application of innovation strategies, comprehensive lectures, regular assignments, tests and active interaction between teachers and students. The Department conducts various activities, events, fests, industrial visits, expert’s talk to give a wider exposure to the students.The purpose of inducing the subjects of Basic Science & Humanities in Engineering study is to lay a solid foundation of basic concepts for innovative future with limitless opportunities. Therefore, the department acts as an active substance to develop perfect approach to unlock their hidden ability, personality and communication skills to fulfil the needs of young engineers.
